COVID19 Masks and Co2? Wearing a mask won’t cause CO2 poisoning
I'm getting questions about wearing masks for COVID19 and the effects of CO2. Oxygen and carbon dioxide (CO2) are gases that can easily diffuse across/through a mask, even N95. For people with no underlying lung disease, wearing a mask is not harmful and at times encourages deep breathing which is good for you. This has been studied. Think about surgeons and other health care workers who wear masks all day long. Also, the symptoms of increased CO2 are very noticeable- headache, confusion, sleepiness, feeling jittery or anxious. But the brain notices when CO2 levels are abnormal and force your breathing to regulate to address it. Do you have question about COVID19 or health topics in general? Let us know in the comments.
